Description
This large scale woodcut print shows its skilful composition made up of repeated elements on a tilted ground which carries the viewer’s eyes into the majestic mountains of the deep distance where the land is marked with horizontal lines. The barren landscape, depicting dark brown winter vegetation, consists of groups of triangled outcrops of land, each portrayed in light yellow with overprinting in brown, which are separated by light green land, river and the white roofs of the village. The use of repeated elements in the portrayal of the landscape is a characteristic of Heilongjiang prints, where Yu Chengyou now works, but here Yu combines a crisp and exact rendering of minutely cut detail in a composition that verges on the abstract. Yu has created an image that has a more profound view of nature. The print has been shown as a significant piece in many exhibitions since made in 2011.
